CAD: What is the Bass Collective? Is this a school?

H.G.: It is a school for bass players. It is a division of the Drummers Collective, which has been renamed Collective, that has been in operation over 25 years. It has been a good place for people to study and for me to teach.

I have private students and teach small classes as well. I have a variety of students that vary in age range, the youngest I've had being 9 and the oldest 72. Most of the students are in their late teens and early 20's and want to train to become a pros. Others come from different parts of the world and have time off from their day jobs and want to become better at playing bass and music. Some are beginners who are playing bass for the first time. One of the main things about the Collective is we have classes and programs to accommodate a wide variety of situations.

Teaching is something that is in my blood and I like doing it. Both my parents were teachers, one at the preschool level and the other at the collegiate level. I don't mind teaching people who are in their first year of playing or if they have difficulty learning. I'm usually the one to volunteer to take a beginner or if someone seems to be slower in their development. Many who have been playing a long time don't like to teach people that are just starting out.
